Driving tips for visitors to the UK
When you’re driving in the UK, there are a few important traffic regulations to keep in mind. Parking restrictions are taken seriously here, so always check for signs and road markings before leaving your car. You’ll also want to watch out for toll roads – some motorways and bridges require payment.
Box junctions are another thing to be aware of. These are the areas with yellow criss-cross hatching you’ll spot at traffic lights and road junctions. Don’t stop in them unless you’re turning right and only traffic coming towards you is stopping you from doing so.
Many UK towns and cities also have bus lanes, which are clearly marked with signs and road markings. These are strictly for buses (and sometimes taxis or cyclists) during certain hours, so keep an eye on the times displayed.
All of these areas are monitored by enforcement cameras, and if you break the rules, you’ll receive a penalty charge notice in the post. The good news? Most fines are avoidable once you know what to look out for.
